Learn piano on the Yamaha PSR-E483

Short answer

Plug the PSR-E483 into a laptop with a USB data cable, open TwoThree in Chrome or Edge, and allow MIDI. The lessons hear every key you press, and the keyboard makes the sound. TwoThree is built and tested on a PSR-E483.

The PSR-E483’s 61 keys, C2 to C7. Top row: the usual names, used by TwoThree and most books. Bottom row: Yamaha’s names, one octave lower. The outlined key is middle C.

Connect it

The USB TO HOST port on the back is USB-C. Use a USB-A to USB-C or a USB-C to USB-C cable, under 3 m. It must be a data cable: a charge-only cable sends no notes.

Windows and macOS need no driver for MIDI. The first time, Chrome asks to allow MIDI devices: choose Allow. On a Mac the keyboard shows up as “Digital Keyboard”.

The Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver on Windows is only for sending audio. TwoThree doesn’t need it.

Check five settings

While you play, TwoThree notices Dual, Split and Touch Response Off, and says what to change.

Middle C is C4, or C3 on a Yamaha

On the PSR-E483, middle C is the third C from the left. Yamaha’s manual and screen call it C3. TwoThree and most piano books call it C4. It’s the same key.

With a Yamaha set as your keyboard, TwoThree shows both names: “C4 (Yamaha C3)”. More in Find middle C.

The keyboard makes the sound

TwoThree never plays the notes you press, so you hear them with no delay. The click and the demo notes go to the PSR over the same cable and play through its speakers or your headphones.

Start with your first note

The first lesson finds the black-key groups on your PSR-E483, then every C, then middle C. No account needed. Your practice saves on this device. A free account keeps it safe and on your other devices.
